HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College had a 7-6 first-quarter lead before Bridgewater College scored 45 unanswered points for a 51-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference football win on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. QB Jay Scroggins passed for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead the visiting Eagles (5-0, 3-0), who scored four touchdowns on the ground, as well. Senior captain and QB Clay Vick/Raleigh, N.C. passed for 93 yards and one touchdown for the host Tigers (1-5, 0-4).
BC took its opening possession 65 yards on five plays for the game's first points, a nine-yard scoring run by Matt DeMasi at 13:28. The PAT kick was no good and it was 6-0.
H-SC answered on its first possession, driving 75 yards on 14 plays, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Vick to junior WR Dillon Costello/Haymarket at 6:51. Junior K Rhett Andersen/Poquoson added the PAT for the 7-6 advantage. A key play on the drive was a 16-yard pass completion from senior QB Austin Murphy/Melfa to senior captain and WR Major Morgan/Onancock on third and seven to keep the drive alive.
The Eagles took a 13-7 lead less than two minutes later when Chad Jones scored on a four-yard run at 5:13 of the first quarter to finish a five-play, 70-yard drive in 1:38. Logan Weis added the PAT.
BC added three touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 34-7 at halftime. The Eagles scored on a six-yard pass from Scroggins to Trey Stephens at 13:15, a three-yard run by Demetreus Jalepes at 8:47 and a 29-yard run by Noah Beckley on the final play of the half. Weis added all three PATs for the margin at the intermission.
BC scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, including an eight-yard pass from Scroggins to Noah Krogh at 11:06 and a 13-yard pass from Scroggins to Jones at 6:30. Weis made both PATs and the visitors led 48-7 after three quarters.
Cam Gieseman added a 20-yard field goal for BC early in the fourth quarter to provide for the final margin.
The Tigers had four possessions in the third quarter, but each were only three plays before the possession went back to BC. The hosts went three-and-out again on their first possession of the fourth quarter before closing the game with a 12-play, 43-yard drive that ended at the visitor's 38 yard line as time expired.
Vick passed for the 93 yards (22-34) and one touchdown with two interceptions. Murphy finished with 24 yards passing (3-4) and no interceptions. Junior RB Cole Becker/Spring Lake, N.C. ran for 45 yards on 11 carries, and sophomore WR Justin Primm/Fairfax added 12 yards rushing on four carries. Junior WR Blake Page/Richmond had 46 yards receiving on seven catches, Costello had seven receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown, while Morgan added 24 yards on four catches.
Junior CB Brad Jeffers/Warrenton and senior captain and LB Griffin Davis/Charlottesville each had 13 tackles for the Tigers, and Davis had a sack, as well. Junior LB Brendan Weinberg/Apex, N.C. added 12 tackles, and freshman CB Jabril Lewis/Virginia Beach had nine tackles.
Scroggins passed for the 232 yards (17-27) and three touchdowns with no interceptions for BC. Stephens added 40 yards passing (1-1) with no interceptions and Matt Lawton had 34 yards passing (1-2) with no interceptions. Jarrod Denham had 56 yards rushing on two attempts, Albert Mensah had 51 yards on 12 carries, Jalepes had 49 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown, Beckley had 47 yards on two carries and one touchdown, DeMasi had 33 yards on three carries and one touchdown and Jones added his four-yard scoring run on his only attempt. Jalepes added 73 yards receiving on three catches, Jones had 35 yards receiving on two catches and one touchdown and Stephens added two receptions for 10 yards and one touchdown.
Chase Rosenthal had seven tackles and one interception for the Eagles, while Deion Richardson added six tackles.
1982 and 1983 ODAC Football Championships
It was Homecoming for H-SC and the College recognized the 1982 and 1983 ODAC Championship football teams at halftime, presenting them with championship rings. The 1982 Tigers finished 4-1 in the ODAC and featured five First Team All-ODAC honorees, including ODAC Player of the Year Hiter Harris, along with David Allen, Doug Parsons, Phil Suazo and Frank Wheeler. The 1983 Tigers finished 5-1 in the ODAC and also featured five First Team All-ODAC honorees, including David Allen, Brad Cary, Doug Parsons, Gus Paulette and Phil Suazo. Both teams were coached by the late J. Stokeley Fulton, who earned ODAC Coach of the Year honors each season.
