Torrential Rainfall Plagues Soccer Game in Loss to Virginia Wesleyan

An unexpected heavy rainfall plagued most of the soccer game on Wednesday night as Hampden-Sydney lost 1-0 to Virginia Wesleyan University in each team's ODAC opener.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Virginia Wesleyan capitalized in the eighth minute via a corner kick. Evan Kastetter sent in the corner kick, it connected with Austin McKenzie and his header got deflected, but the rebound was directed back in by Andrew Freeman at 7:26
  • H-SC had what appeared to be a goal later in the first half as what looked like the goalkeeper juggling the ball on the ground was tapped in by a Tiger, but the referees deemed the ball to be in possession of the goalkeeper and waived off the goal
  • Shortly after that, the rain started falling and by halftime became a heavy downpour that lasted for the majority of the second half
  • Each team had a few chances in the second half but neither was able to capitalize as stalwart defenses prevailed
