Robbie Bailey is in his 12th year as an assistant baseball coach at Hampden-Sydney College during 2023-24, while also serving as the program's recruiting coordinator. The 2022 recruiting class was ranked fourth in NCAA Division III by Perfect Game USA, the top-ranked class in Virginia. The 2021 recruiting class was ranked 17th nationally, tops in Virginia; the 2020 class was 19th nationally, second in Virginia; the 2019 class was 25th nationally, third in Virginia; the 2018 class was 18th nationally, first in Virginia; the 2017 class was 48th nationally, third in Virginia and the 2016 class was 60th nationally, sixth in Virginia. Robbie also serves as a strength and conditioning coach for the athletic department.
The Tigers have broken or tied numerous records since Bailey's time on the coaching staff. The 2016 squad set a school record for wins in a season with 28, surpassing the mark of 27 set in 2014 and 2005. The 2016 team ERA of 3.42 is the lowest mark in school history and ranked 24th nationally. Additionally, in 2016 the Tigers ranked 61st in strikeout-walk ratio (2.14), 94th in strikeouts per nine innings (6.8), 84th in WHIP (1.42), and 82nd in walks per nine innings (3.18). Lastly, Dylan Gonzales '16 posted a 1.62 ERA as a senior, the fifth best single-season ERA in school history.
Coach Bailey has coached three All-Region players at his alma mater in pitcher Luke Rabiej '13, utility player and pitcher Reggie Johnson '16 and pitcher Owen Tappy '23. Johnson played professionally for the Greenville Astros and the Tri-City ValleyCats, both minor league affiliates of the Houston Astros. Reggie was named to the Penn League All-Star Team while playing for the ValleyCats. Bailey has coached three professional players, including Johnson (Houston Astros organization), Jonathan Triesler ’20 (Alpine Cowboys of the Independent Pecos League) and Bradford Webb ’20 (Texas Rangers organization).
Bailey returned to the Hill after spending two years as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. While working with the Hawks' pitchers, Bailey helped UMES set a school record for most strikeouts in a season. His staff also recorded the second-lowest ERA in a season.
At H-SC, Bailey was a four-year pitcher under head coach Jeff Kinne from 2007-10. He appeared in 40 games while making 24 starts. Bailey was impressive on the mound, recording 106 strikeouts, including 43 Ks in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He also posted a career record of 11-7.
Robbie is a 2010 graduate of Hampden-Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and commerce. Robbie and his wife Jes Nicole have two sons, Beckham and Brooks, and one daughter Cari.
