Matt Griswold Announces Retirerment (4/4/2025)
Matt Griswold is in his seventh year as the Head Cross Country Coach and Director of Club Sports and Intramurals at Hampden-Sydney College during 2024-25, and his sixth year as the Head Distance Track Coach. He was named the new cross country head coach on August 17, 2018.
H-SC has enjoyed consistent success in cross country over the past three seasons, placing seventh in each of the last two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships (2022, 2023), following an eighth-place effort in 2021. It's the finest three-year stretch of finishes at the ODAC Championships since 2006-08 when the Tigers finished seventh, seventh and sixth. H-SC has also competed as a full team at the NCAA South Regionals for three consecutive years, including two Top 20 finishes. A new school-record for the 8K distance was established in 2021 (26:43), among four student-athletes who have posted Top 50 times in program history.
The distance track program has also been successful, qualifying four to the 2022 ODAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, before qualifying two for the ODAC Outdoor Championships. The Tigers qualified five in two events (one relay team) for the 2023 ODAC Indoor Championships, before qualifying one to the ODAC Outdoor Championships. H-SC had five qualify in four events (two relay teams) for the 2024 ODAC Indoor Championships, before qualifying five in three events to the ODAC Outdoor Championships. New school records were established in eight individual events and one relay among six student-athletes during 2024.
Griswold is a veteran high school administrator and coach, coaching baseball, football, wrestling, and track, and serving as the Athletic Director of South Putnam (IN) Middle and High School for seven years.
As an Athletic Director, Griswold's coaches and teams attained success at the highest levels, including state championships and several Indiana High School Athletic Association sportsmanship awards. During his tenure he also served as events coordinator, running numerous cross country and track meets at the conference and state level.
An avid runner, Griswold enjoys ultra trail running and participating in a wide range of sports.
A native of Coatesville, Indiana, Griswold is a 1988 graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. Matt and his wife, Jane, who serves as executive assistant to the President at H-SC, reside in Hampden-Sydney.
