HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.—The Hampden-Sydney College golf team is ranked seventh nationally in the
Division III Bushnell Golfweek Pre-Spring Poll, as announced recently by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The Tigers are one of nine schools from the South Region ranked among the Top 25 to begin the 2021 campaign.
H-SC will be led this spring by junior All-Americans
Hunter Martin/Gloucester and
John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount. Martin was named to the 2020 NCAA Division III PING All-America Second Team by the GCAA, while Ferguson was a Division III PING All-America Honorable Mention selection. Each was named to the PING All-South Region Team, as well. Martin ranked 18th in Division III a year ago with his 71.69 average through 16 rounds. Ferguson ranked 47th in Division III with his 72.94 average through 16 rounds.
In addition, Martin and Ferguson were First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selections, and along with senior
Allen Smith/Durham, NC—the trio were each named 2019-20 Division III Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the GCAA. Smith ranked 211th in Division III last year with his 76.54 average through 13 rounds. Sophomore
Alex Rubino/Charlotte, NC also returns to the program after ranking 11th in Division III a year ago with his 71.50 average through 10 rounds.
H-SC is led by fourth-year head coachÂ
Chad Eisele who garnered 2019-20 ODAC Jack Jensen Coach of the Year and Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division Men's Golf Coach of the Year honors for the second-straight year. The Tigers posted one tournament win among six Top 10 (three top five) team finishes in six tournaments last year, averaging 289.44 per round to rank fourth in Division III.
Illinois Wesleyan is top-ranked in the poll, while the nine nationally-ranked South Region programs include Huntingdon (AL) (2), Emory (GA) (3), Methodist (NC) (5), Piedmont (GA) (6), H-SC (7), fellow ODAC member Guilford (NC) (9), Greensboro (NC) (T-11), Oglethorpe (GA) (T-18) along with ODAC member Washington and Lee (22).
H-SC will begin its season on February 22-23 at the
Oglethorpe/Royal Lakes Spring Invitational, a 36-hole tournament at the Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
