Hampden-Sydney Soccer Advances To ODAC Tournament Semifinals With 2-0 Shutout Over Randolph

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team advanced to the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament semifinals with a 2-0 shutout past Randolph College on Sunday afternoon from Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The top-seeded Tigers (13-5-1) extended their unbeaten streak to 13 contests with the win against the eighth-seeded WildCats (10-8-1).

H-SC looked to score early against the WildCats when senior Jacob Mann/Mebane, N.C. forced the Randolph keeper to make save in the lower right corner of the goal just over a minute into the game. The WildCats answered with a shot of their own early in the ninth minute, with senior Ian Connor/Midlothian making the save for the Tigers.

It was in the 15th minute that Mann had his second shot of the game, but a deflection by Randolph gave the Tigers their first corner kick of the game. Senior Spell Carr/Clinton, N.C. took the corner and found freshman Boyce Purdie/Clinton, N.C. in the box, who one-footed the ball past the keeper to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.

At the 17:00 mark, Mann would make the most of his third shot of the game off a pass from senior Brian Tarnai/Glen Allen. A long pass from Tarnai fell in front of Mann inside the goal box, who left-footed the ball on the left side of the goal, to extend the Tigers' lead to 2-0.

Both teams played even the rest of the half with H-SC leading 2-0 at the intermission.
After the WildCats were called for three yellow cards on one stoppage of play at the 53:30 mark, Carr would take the first shot of the second half, forcing another save by Randolph.

After tallying only one save in the first half, Connor faced a flurry of shots by the WildCats after the break. In the final 25 minutes of the game, Connor made seven more saves, setting a career-high with eight total.

The Tigers led in shots (14-12) and saves (8-7), while the WildCats had the edge in corner kicks (6-5).

As the highest seed in the tournament, H-SC will host both the semifinals and championhip next weekend. H-SC will play #4 Lynchburg in the first ODAC Tournament semifinals on Friday, November 8 at 4 p.m. #2 Washington and Lee and #3 Roanoke will face each other in the other semifinal from Hellmuth-Gibson Field at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
