HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 4-1 win over Ferrum on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. Senior Cole Burton/Haw River, N.C. scored twice, while fellow senior Spell Carr/Clinton, N.C. tallied a pair of assists in the win. The Tigers are now 8-0-1 in their last nine games dating back to September 11. The nine-game unbeaten streak matches that of the 2009 team which won nine consecutive matches during a 16-4 campaign.

The Tigers (9-5-1, 4-0-1) sit atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings and are the only team in the ODAC without a conference loss. The Panthers fall to 10-5 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC.

H-SC looked to score early with senior Eli Strong/Windermere, Fla. taking the game's first shot less than a minute into the contest. Just 11-seconds later, freshman Kade Wheeler/Blacksburg took the Tiger's second shot but missed wide. After Ferrum was called for a pair of offsides, the Tigers were able to secure two corner kicks.

At the 16:09 mark, Burton was able to corral a pass from Carr in front of the Ferrum goal to put the Tigers up 1-0 a third of the way through the opening period. Ferrum would respond less than seven minutes later, tying the score at 1-1 at the 22:57 mark.

Not to be outdone, H-SC would retake the lead when Strong got a foot on the ball off a double pass from seniors Jon Vergara/Chesterfield and Sean McMurray/Apex, N.C. that found its way past the Panther keeper with less than 12 minutes left in the first half. The Tigers kept the lead at 2-1 at the break.

Early in the second half, senior Jacob Mann/Mebane, N.C. took Carr's pass and scored from in front of the goal to extend the Tiger's lead to 3-1. Burton would push the lead even further just three and half minutes later when he took a deflection off a Ferrum defender and found the back of the net to score what would be the final goal of the game and the Tigers led, 4-1.

Senior keeper Ian Connor/Midlothian made a season-high five saves in the win, including an impressive penalty-kick save in the 73rd minute, diving to his right and sending the ball wide of the net. He now has 21 saves on the season.

The Tigers had 22 shots on the night, a season-high, with the Panthers taking just six. H-SC also led in corner kicks, 7-1.

H-SC will look to establish a new school record for unbeaten streaks when it travels to Emory & Henry on Tuesday, October 22, at 6 p.m. in Emory.
