GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampden-Sydney Soccer team picked up their third win in row with a 3-1 win over Guilford in a non-conference match-up. Senior Cole Burton/Haw River, N.C. sent a corner kick toward the goal in the 15th minute that was sent off the foot of a Guilford defender into the goal for what would be the game winner. The Tigers improve to 4-5 overall while the Quakers fall to 2-5-1.
H-SC looked to take it early to the Quakers with three shots in the first 10 minutes while Guilford did not take theirs until the 20th minute.
Senior Spell Carr/Clinton, N.C. got the Tigers on the board first with a penalty kick goal at the 10:21 mark in the first half. Just four minutes later, Burton took the corner kick for the Tigers, sending the ball in front of the goal before the ball went off the foot of a Quaker defender and past the keeper to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead just 14 minutes into the game.
In the 41st minute, senior Doug Hogan/Scottsville was able to corral a ball in front of the goal and make a diving kick toward the goal as he fell down that sailed past the Guilford goalie on the right side to increase the Tigers lead to 3-0.
After playing even for the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Quakers were able to find a pass on the left side of the box to put the ball in the back of the net to pull within 3-1 in the 56th minute. H-SC kept the hosts at bay the rest of the game, not allowing another Guilford shot while the Tigers took four more.
Senior Ian Connor/Midlothian made two saves in the win while picking up his third straight win.
The Tigers return home on Saturday, September 28 when they host Randolph-Macon in their ODAC opener. The contest with the Yellow Jackets is part of the celebration of the 50th Year of Tiger soccer as well as Family Weekend. The contest is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
