(October 25, 2008)ASHLAND, VA – Hampden-Sydney coaches and former Randolph-Macon standouts Josh Laux and Matt Cooper enjoyed a nice homecoming at their alma mater as the Tigers had an impressive 6-0 win in Ashland. Though the Yellow Jackets tried to sting first with an Ethan Cornelio shot just 30 seconds into the game, it was the Tigers who pounced with five second half goals to earn their 10th win of the season.

Hampden-Sydney's first goal came as the duo of freshman Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and junior Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) connected yet again. This time it was Wharton who played the ball up to Robertson. With his back to the goal, Robertson quickly turned and fired a shot that found the back of the net.

Randolph-Macon had a chance to possibly tie the game at 1-1 in the 28th minute off of a free kick. As the ball was approaching the goal, forward Matt Andes went up to try and head it in, but the ball was just out of reach and the Tigers escaped danger.

Once the Tigers faced the close encounters from Cornelio and Andes, the entire defense stepped its game up and gave the Yellow Jacket offense no room to breath. The defense also saw an exceptional game from junior defender Brett Chonko (Farmville, VA/Prince Edward).

After a few missed opportunities late in the first half, the Tigers came out in the second half ready to finish as just four minutes into the half Wharton found the net off of a beautiful Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) service.

Krewinghaus was certainly not finished for the day as he blasted a shot by keeper Matty Rocawich from 25 yards out giving him a goal of his own.

Just five minutes later Krewinghaus and Wharton connected again giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Krewinghaus played a perfect ball in the box off of a corner that Wharton went up to get and hammered the header home.

Two more Tigers would get in the action as Robertson was able to volley a ball to senior Ian Ciejek (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), and Ciejek ripped a shot for his first goal of the day and second of the season.

In the 79th minute, freshman Gregorio Pacheco (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) got in the scoring action as he fired a shot that deflected off of a Macon defender and rolled in the net giving Hampden-Sydney the 6-0 lead.

With the win the Tigers improve to 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the ODAC.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action for their final regular season game as they will face the Quakers of Guilford College in Greensboro, NC on Tuesday the 28th at 3:00 pm.
