SALEM, VA (August 27, 2008)—The soccer Tigers' strong finish in 2007 has paid off as they have been ranked third in the ODAC preseason poll. The Tigers had a tremendous 2007 finishing 11-6-3 overall and 6-1-2 in conference. They earned the no. 2 seed in the ODAC tournament and ended the season on a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to third seeded Washington and Lee, leaving the Tigers ranked #7 in the South Region by the NSCAA.

The Tigers, led by reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Josh Laux, look to continue their success in 2008 as the return the bulk of the team including six All-ODAC performers. Now senior midfielder Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) was the only Tiger to garner first team honors, but he was joined by senior forward Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope), junior forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic), and sophomore defender Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) on the second team; junior defender Christopher Tait (Nokesville, VA/Brentsville); and sophomore goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) who earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors.

The Tigers received three first place votes and were surpassed only by No. 1 pick Virginia Wesleyan and No. 2 pick Roanoke. Hampden-Sydney will play at Roanoke, but will face the preseason No. 1 Marlins at home on September 27th at 3 pm.

The Tigers get set to take the field for their season opener on August 30 at 12 pm as they take on the Cougars of Mountain State University in the first game of the Arby's/Hampden-Sydney Soccer Classic.
