SALEM, VA (September 22, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney freshman midfielder Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) is off to an outstanding start to his collegiate career as he recently earned ODAC Player of the Week honors. Wharton was rewarded for his strong play in the Tigers' 3-1 victory over Stevenson University and 7-0 victory over Emory and Henry College.
In the road win over Stevenson, Wharton scored two of the Tigers three goals. It only took him 29 minutes to find the back of the net and break the 0-0 tie as he chipped the ball right over the Stevenson keeper. Later, in a physical 2-1 game, Wharton provided the insurance goal off of a header to give the Tigers the late 3-1 advantage and a sealed win.
When Hampden-Sydney hit the road again to face Emory and Henry, Wharton picked up right where he left off, breaking the 0-0 tie again by getting the first goal of the game. This time it was breakaway run where Wharton caught the ball and finished beautifully. Once Wharton broke the ice, the rest of the Tigers pounced, earning a 7-0 win.
Wharton is currently second on the team in goals (5) and points (11) and fourth in the conference in goals and goals per game (0.83).
The Tigers are again on the road on Tuesday facing a tough Greensboro College, but look for Wharton and the rest of the Tigers to return home to Miller Field on Saturday the 27th as they face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 pm.
