Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse Wins ODAC Opener On The Road At Randolph 21-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. had two goals and three assists, while junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. and sophomore Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. each had two goals and one assist, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 21-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse victory at Randolph College on Saturday in Lynchburg.   Sophomores Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. and Reilly French/Frederick, Md., along with freshman Drane Garven/Concord, N.C., each added two goals for the visiting Tigers (6-2, 1-0), who led 12-3 at halftime against the host Wildcats (2-4, 0-1).

H-SC took a commanding 7-1 lead through one quarter, getting goals from Doetzer (2g, 1a) at 13:20 and 10:31, assisted by Medwar (2g, 3a) each time, sandwiched around a goal by Medwar at 13:18, assisted by sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. (1a).  Also scoring in the opening period were O'Brien (2g) at 9:19, assisted by Medwar, freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g) at 8:19, assisted by Hayden (2g, 1a), Medwar unassisted at 2:45 and Reilly French unassisted with just 43-seconds left in the quarter.

The Tigers took a 5-2 advantage in the second quarter to lead 12-3 at the intermission.  Goals were scored by Hayden at 12:10, assisted by junior captain Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C., freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. (1g) at 11:35, assisted by senior captain John Burke/Richmond (1a), O'Brien at 10:47, assisted by Doetzer, Hayden unassisted at 6:51 and Reilly French unassisted once-again at 4:09.

H-SC posted the 30-minute shutout against the Wildcats during the third and fourth quarters, while adding six goals in the third and three more goals in the fourth toward the final margin.  Goals in the third quarter went to sophomore Palmer Jones/Chester (1g) unassisted at 14:54, freshman Max Koontz/Winston-Salem, N.C. (1g) unassisted at 12:11, Garven with back-to-back unassisted goals at 10:56 and 7:32, junior Will Hughes/Potomac, Md. (1g) at 3:19, assisted by senior Seamus Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. (1a) and freshman Hunter Harrington/Virginia Beach (1g) at :58, assisted by junior Augy White/Apex, N.C. (1g, 1a).

In the final quarter, goals were scored by White unassisted at 8:33, freshman Connor Rogers/Chatham (1g) unassisted at 7:24 and senior Jack Scheer/Lakeville, Minn. (1g) at 4:02 with an assist from freshman Murfee Flickinger/Glen Allen (1a).

Arcuri started at goalkeeper and played the first 24:52, yielding the three goals while making three saves.  Sophomore William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the next 18:54, allowing no goals with one save.  Senior Nick Steen/Purcellville played the final 16:14, allowing no goals with five saves.  Brummett was 6-8 on face-offs, and collected five ground balls.

H-SC will be idle for a week before hosting ODAC opponent and nationally-ranked No. 16 Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
