HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. had four goals and two assists, and senior captain John Burke/Richmond had one goal and five assists, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 12-4 non-conference men's lacrosse victory past Centre (Ky.) College on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. added two goals for the host Tigers (4-2), who led 7-2 at halftime. Leland Gray had one goal and one assist for the visiting Colonels (2-2).
H-SC took a 3-1 lead through one quarter, getting goals from Hayden (2g) at 7:53, freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g, 1a) at 5:50 and Medwar (4g, 2a) at 1:16. Clagett was making his first collegiate start, scoring his first points as a Tiger. Burke (1g, 5a) and Medwar provided the assists on the first two goals, while Medwar tallied unassisted to close the quarter.
The Tigers made it a 4-1 advantage in the second quarter to lead 7-2 at the intermission. Medwar scored at 7:59, assisted by Burke, and Burke scored at 7:21, assisted by Medwar. Sophomore Reilly French/Frederick, Md. (1g) scored at 2:54, assisted by Burke, and Hayden (2g) scored with just one-second remaining in the half, assisted once-again by Burke.
H-SC outscored CC 3-2 in the third quarter to take a 10-4 advantage through 45 minutes of action. Junior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C. (1g) scored at 5:15, assisted by Clagett, and Medwar scored at 4:09, assisted by freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa.(1g, 1a), while Medwar scored unassisted at 1:42.
The Tigers tallied the only two goals of the fourth quarter to provide for the final margin of victory. Duffy scored at 4:33, assisted by who else … Burke, while freshman Drane Garven/Concord, N.C. (1g) scored with 44-seconds left to play, assisted by classmate Aidan Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. (1a).
Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. was outstanding while playing the first 54:55, yielding only the four goals while making 10 saves with three caused turnovers. Sophomore William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the final 5:05 with two saves. Sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. was 9-12 on face-offs, and collected eight ground balls, French had five ground balls, freshman Kevin Dunne/Mechanicsville was 4-5 on face-offs and senior Anton Kheirani/Alexandria contributed two caused turnovers.
H-SC will be idle for a week before playing William Peace (N.C.) University on Saturday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, North Carolina.
