John Burke fed Connor Pool for a man-up goal with 26 seconds left and the Hampden-Sydney defense turned over Roanoke after the face-off to pull off a 10-9 win over #16 Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon.

  • The Tigers dominated the first quarter as Ian Levin tallied three goals to put H-SC up 3-1 at 1:35
  • Chandler Shaheen shot at the buzzer bounced in off a Roanoke defender. Initially ruled no goal, the referees discussed the play and overturned the call to put H-SC ahead 4-1 after 15 minutes
  • The Maroons drew within one with goals at 13:35 and 12:35 of the second, but Levin found the back of the net again at 7:59
  • Levin then assisted on a Burke goal with less than a minute to play to extend the advantage to 6-3 after one half
  • Roanoke came out the aggressor in the third quarter, using a 5-1 run to go ahead 8-7 at 4:14 remaining
  • Shaheen helped right the tide for H-SC with an unassisted goal at 3:07
  • Defenses took over in the fourth quarter as neither team would score until Brendan Devane took the lead back for Roanoke at 5:45, but H-SC was called for two one-minute penalties to be served back to back
  • The man-down defense held serve, forcing a Devane turnover, then the Tiger clearing game and man-down offense ran out the penalty
  • Following a Tiger timeout, Levin fed Shaheen for the game-tying goal at 2:23
  • Roanoke won the ensuing face-off, but Devane made another costly error to give possession back to H-SC with 1:20 to play
  • H-SC successfully cleared the ball, but preseason All-American Conn Curry was whistled for a one-minute penalty with just 49 seconds left
  • The Tiger man-up offense worked the ball around before Pool scored the game-winning goal off a Burke pass
  • Roanoke won the face-off and followed with IV Stucker shot that went wide. Roanoke picked up the ground ball, but Jason Sarro's shot went wide with a Tiger player closest to the ball where it went out with just a few seconds to play as H-SC heaved the ball down field to run out the clock

  • Ian Davies stopped 16 shots
  • Griffin Weber won 14 of 17 face-offs
  • Daniel Medvetz scored three times
  • IV Stucker recorded two goals and two assists
  • Garritt Schwarz found the back of the net twice

  • Roanoke won 15 of 20 face-offs
  • Man-down defenses got the better of the man-up offenses as Roanoke went just 1-7 on EMOs while Hampden-Sydney was 2-7
  • H-SC outshot Roanoke 49-44 while the Maroons led 33-27 in ground balls

  • Hampden-Sydney travels to Shenandoah University on Saturday for a 1 pm contest.
