MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- No. 13 Hampden-Sydney College posted a first-round score of one-over par 285 on Sunday to stand in a tie for fifth among 18 teams at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational being played at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida. Senior Adam Hade/Richmond is leading the Tigers with his one-under par round of 70, tied for 14th individually among the 90 golfers.
Hade posted three birdies and 13 pars during his opening round on the par 71, 6,725-yard layout at the Raven Golf Club at Sandestin. He is being followed by senior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (70, T-22nd) and sophomore Hunter Martin/Gloucester Point (70, T-22nd), junior Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (73, T-37th), along with sophomore John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (75, T-53rd). Shober added two birdies and 14 pars on the day for the Tigers, while Martin had four birdies and 11 pars, Smith had two birdies and 12 pars, and Ferguson contributed 15 pars over the first round.
The prestigious and highly-competitive tournament features 15 of the Top 24 teams nationally, as ranked in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. No. 1 Emory is leading the event with its 280, followed by No. 24 Greensboro (282), No. 3 Huntingdon (283), No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan (284), along with No. 13 H-SC (285) and No. 8 Methodist (285) among the top five. Fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference member and No. 5 Guilford stands 16th at 300. Rob Wuethrich of Illinois Wesleyan is the individual leader through 18 holes at seven-under 64.
H-SC will continue its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on Monday in Florida.
