No. 13 Hampden-Sydney Golf Finishes 1st At Royal Lakes Fall Invitational | Alex Rubino & John Hatcher Ferguson Tie For 2nd

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- No. 13 Hampden-Sydney College posted a final round team score of seven-under par 281 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 17-under par 559 (278-281) to finish first among 18 teams at the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational played at the Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia. Freshman Alex Rubino/Charlotte, N.C. (71-66) and sophomore John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (69-68) each led the Tigers with their respective two-day scores of seven-under par 137 to tie for second individually among the 102 golfers. It's the first team title this year for H-SC, and the program's first team win since claiming the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament in September 2018.

H-SC's two-day score of 559 is a new school record and a tournament-record for the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational, as well, at the par 72, 7,098-yard Royal Lakes G&CC layout located approximately 50 miles northeast of Atlanta. The Tigers won the event by seven shots over runners-up and nationally-ranked No. 5 Guilford (566), followed by McDaniel (573), Babson (575), along with No. 12 and tournament host Oglethorpe (576) and LaGrange (576) among the top five. Ben Womack of LaGrange took individual medalist honors at eight-under 136 (69-67) through 36 holes, just one shot ahead of Rubino and Ferguson.

Rubino and Ferguson each posted new collegiate-bests for 36 holes (137), and Rubino's final-round 66 is a collegiate-best, as well, while the lowest round of the day and equaling the lowest round of the tournament. Rubino and Ferguson were followed by sophomore Hunter Martin/Gloucester Point (70-72--142, T-14th), along with seniors Adam Hade/Richmond (68-75--143, T-19th) and Bruce Shober/Appomattox (73-75--148, T-41st). Junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. (74-73--147, T-36th) played as an individual for the Tigers.

H-SC finished first in par 4 scoring (3.93), was second in par 5 scoring (4.68) and tied for fifth in par 3 scoring (3.18). The Tigers tied for first in eagles (2), tied for third in birdies (38) and tied for fourth in pars (114).

Rubino and Ferguson each tied for third in par 4 scoring (3.85). Ferguson and Hade each tied for fifth in par 5 scoring (4.50). Rubino and Martin each tied for sixth in par 3 scoring (2.88), and the same duo tied for 10th in par 5 scoring (4.63). Hade tied for eighth in par 4 scoring (3.90). Ferguson and Yerramsetti each tied for 11th in par 3 scoring (3.00), and Yerramsetti tied for 23rd in par 4 scoring (4.05). Ferguson, Martin and Yerramsetti each tied for second in eagles (1). Rubino and Hade each tied for fourth in birdies (10). Ferguson tied for fifth in pars (26). Martin tied for 10th in pars (24). Yerramsetti tied for 19th in birdies (8). Rubino tied for 20th in pars (23).

The event also included ODAC members Bridgewater (589, 12th), Ferrum (600, T-13th) and Lynchburg (615, T-16th).

H-SC will compete again next week at the 54-hole Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational on October 13-15 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida.
