FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- No. 13 Hampden-Sydney College posted a first-round score of 10-under par 278 on Monday to stand first among 18 teams at the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational being played at the Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia. Senior Adam Hade/Richmond is leading the Tigers with his four-under par round of 68, tied for fifth individually among the 102 golfers.
Hade posted eight birdies and seven pars during his opening round on the par 72, 6,826-yard layout. He is being followed by sophomores John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (69, T-7th) and Hunter Martin/Gloucester (70, T-14th), freshman Alex Rubino/Charlotte, N.C. (71, T-19) and senior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (73, T-33rd). Ferguson had one eagle, one birdie and 16 pars on the day for the Tigers, while Martin added five birdies and 11 pars, Rubino had four birdies and 11 pars and Shober contributed three birdies and 11 pars over the first round. Junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. is playing as an individual for H-SC and posted a round of 74 that is tied for 43rd, aided by four birdies and nine pars.
H-SC is leading the event with its season-low round of 278, followed by No. 5 Guilford (280), No. 12 and tournament host Oglethorpe (282), Babson (282) and California Lutheran (285) among the top five. Addison Manring of Guilford is the individual leader at six-under 66 through 18 holes.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the 36-hole tournament on Tuesday in Georgia.
