JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- Hampden-Sydney College posted a round of 12-under par 268 on Saturday for a 36-hole team score of 571 in men's golf to stand second among 29 teams at the 48th Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the Paradise Point Golf Course on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (74-66) and freshman John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (75-65) are leading the Tigers with their respective totals of three-under par 140.
Smith and Ferguson are being followed by junior Adam Hade/Richmond (80-66--146), classmate Bruce Shober/Appomattox (76-71--147) and senior Jamie Agnew/Fairfax (78-72--150). Ferguson was five-under par in his second round, while Smith and Hade were each four-under par.
The Tigers, ranked 14th in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, played the 5,911-yard, par 70 Scarlett course on Saturday, after playing the 6,883-yard, par 73 Gold course on Friday. H-SC will play the Gold course again on Sunday in the championship flight of the prestigious three-day event at Camp Lejeune.
Methodist (N.C.) is leading the tournament with its 296-272--568, just three shots ahead of the Tigers. H-SC is alone in second with its 571, ahead of North Carolina Wesleyan (572) and Oglethorpe (Ga.) (572), along with Transylvania (Ky.) (576) among the top five teams.
