SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. -- Hampden-Sydney College posted rounds of 286 and 302 on Monday for a team score of 588 in men's golf to stand third among 17 teams at the TaylorMade-Adidas Intercollegiate at the Dataw Island Club on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina. Junior Adam Hade/Richmond is leading the Tigers, ranked 17th in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, with his day one, 36-hole score of even-par 72-72--144, tied for second among 105 golfers at the par 72, 6,789-yard layout.
Hade is being followed by sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (72-75--147, t-11), junior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (74-75--149, t-20), freshman John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (71-80--151, t-27) and senior Jamie Agnew/Fairfax (71-82--153, t-39). H-SC's outstanding opening-round, two-under par 286 was its best 18-hole team score this year and the low round of the day, while good for first-place in the team standings after the first round.
North Carolina Wesleyan (294-293) and Oglethorpe (Ga.) (295-292) are leading the event with their respective totals of 587. The Tigers are just one shot back of the two schools with their 588. Casey Leebrick of York (Pa.) is the individual leader at two-under par 68-74--142 through 36 holes.
H-SC will complete its competition in the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday in South Carolina.
