SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Hampden-Sydney College posted a final-round team score of 297 in men's golf for a 36-hole total of 595 (298-297) to finish third among 18 teams at The Club at Savannah Harbor Classic on Tuesday at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. Junior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (t-7th) and sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (t-9th) each posted Top 10 individual finishes to lead the Tigers among the field of 90 golfers at the par 72, 7,084-yard layout.
H-SC, ranked 20th in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division III Top 25 Poll, defeated six Top 20 teams among nine nationally-ranked programs overall, including top-ranked Emory (Ga.), No. 4 Wittenberg (Ohio), No. 9 Guilford (N.C.), No. 12 North Carolina Wesleyan, No. 13 Washington and Lee and No. 18 Greensboro (N.C.). No. 3 Huntington (Ala.) won the tournament with its 586, while No. 10 Methodist (N.C.) was runners-up at 591. Dan Shepherd of Methodist was the medalist with his one-under par 72-71--143.
Shober tied for seventh with his two-round score of 71-75--146, while Smith tied for ninth with his score of 77-70--147. Smith's day two round of 70 tied for the second-lowest round of the day and for the two days, while Shober posted one of just four eagles over the two days. They were followed by senior Jamie Agnew/Fairfax (75-75--149, t-17th), freshman John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (75-78--153, t-33rd) and junior Adam Hade/Richmond (79-80--159, t-62nd). In addition, sophomore Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. played in a B tournament at the nearby Club at Savannah Quarters, posting a 36-hole score of 78-77--155 to finish second individually.
H-SC is schedule to play again at the TaylorMade-Adidas Intercollegiate on March 11-12 at the Dataw Island Club on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina.
