Golf Wins Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament

HARRISONBURG, VA-The Hampden-Sydney golf team had a strong outing, winning the Tom Kinder Memorial Golf Tournament by four strokes, while freshmen Hunter Martin (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) and John Hatcher Ferguson (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin County) and finished first and second, respectively, after a one-hole playoff. The Tigers also had a B team compete and fair well, finishing fifth in the field of 12.

The two-day tournament was played at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg. The Tigers' top team finished one over par while host Bridgewater (+5) and Lynchburg (+22) rounded out the top three. The Tigers' second team shot 36-over par.

Martin and Ferguson tied for first, each shooting two-under par with Ferguson shooting rounds of 69 and 73, and Martin going 70 and 72. Martin birdied the first hole of the playoff to win the event.

The Tigers had three other top-15 finishers in Allen Smith (Durham, NC/Durham Academy), Bruce Shober (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox), and Adam Hade (Richmond, VA/Deep Run) rounding out the Tigers' top-five. Smith finished 11 at three-over par with rounds of 75 and 72, and Shober and Hade each tied for 13 at four-over par.

Varun Yerramsetti (Birmingham, AL/Indian Springs) tied for 17 at six over par with rounds of 78 and 72, and Rob Witherspoon (Richmond, VA/Cosby) shot one stroke over Yerramsetti, using rounds of 73 and 78 to tie for 19.

Jamie Agnew (Fairfax, VA/Flint Hill School) was one stroke behind Witherspoon at eight-over par, shooting 77 and 75 to tie for 25.

Jimmy Hill (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) placed 30 with rounds of 80 and 75 (+11), and Dylan Taylor (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) rounded out the group, tying for 31 with scores of 79 and 77.

The Tigers will return to action in the Oglethorpe Invitational on October 1-2 at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
