Tigers Place 10th in DIII Match Play Invitational

GREENSBORO, NC-The Hampden-Sydney golf team placed tenth in the DIII Match Play Invitational, hosted by Guilford College at the Grandover Resort. The format was a four-round head to head match play with 16 teams. The Tigers, seeded seventh went 2-2 on the weekend.

The Tigers fell 3-2 to tenth-seeded Webster in the opening round with Bruce Shober (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) and Allen Smith (Durham, NC/Durham Academy) scoring wins for Hampden-Sydney.

The team bounced back in the quarterfinals, defeating 15-seeded Lynchburg 4-1. In the round, Parker Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier), Austin Fockler (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's), Adam Hade (Richmond, VA/Deep Run), and Allen Smith all won. 

Hampden-Sydney then advanced to the ninth place match by defeating 14-seeded Christopher Newport 3-2, behind wins from Hade, Shober, and Parker Smith.

In the ninth place match, the Tigers took a 4-0-1 loss to ninth-seeded Otterbein. Allen Smith recorded the tie.

The Tigers will return to action Monday, April 9 as they compete in the Glenn Heath Shipbulder's Memorial Tournament, at the Williamsburg Club.
