Generals Squeak By Tigers 70-68

The Washington and Lee University Generals squeaked by Hampden-Sydney Basketball 70-68 on Saturday afternoon. 



  • The Tigers started cold down 6-0 and held without a point until the 16:18 mark
  • Down 11-6 at 13:26, H-SC scored the next nine to surge ahead 15-13 midway through the half
  • The lead changed numerous times over the next few minutes with H-SC still in front 22-20 at 6:32
  • W&L scored the next seven and finished the half on a 13-4 run to take a seven-point lead, 33-26, going into halftime
  • Hampden-Sydney came out guns ablazing to open the second half. Down just one, 37-36, at 17:43, Kevin Quinn and Malik Crute hit three straight three pointers to go out in front 45-39 at 16:27
  • H-SC continued to hold on to the lead until a Roy McMillan layup at the 10:11 mark put W&L up 51-50
  • The Tigers regained the lead on a three-point play by Crute at 8:48 and maintained the lead, building it up to 66-60 on another Crute three-point play at 3:32
  • The Generals stormed back, scoring nine consecutive points to go in front 69-66 with 43 ticks left on the clock
  • Hunter Kuehn was sent to the foul line and made both attempts to trim the deficit to just one with 27 seconds remaining
  • The Tigers were forced to foul, and Alex Starr split a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game with 18 seconds to go
  • Crute pulled up for a three and missed with four seconds to play, but the Tigers got the ball back as it went out of bounds off a General
  • Kuehn's contested jumper at the buzzer would go on to fall short 


  • Hunter Kuehn narrowly missed a double-double with 19 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks
  • Malik Crute scored 19 points with four assists
  • Kevin Quinn scored 11
  • Chaise Johnson added four points, six rebounds, and four assists off the bench


  • Roy McMillan scored a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds and three steals
  • Devin Kearns contributed 15 points, six assists, four boards, and two steals
  • Clayton Murtha tacked on 14 points and seven caroms


  • An intense back and forth contest for most of the afternoon, there were 16 lead changes and five ties
  • Both teams struggled to shoot outside the paint. W&L connected on 41.8% of their field goal tries and went just 3-22 from three range while H-SC converted at a 40% rate and made 6 of their 21 attempts beyond the arc
  • W&L had a big advantage on the line, going 21-31 while the Tigers were 14-17
  • The Generals led in second chance points 14-17 and points in the paint 36-26


  • Hampden-Sydney heads to Virginia Beach on Wednesday to play Virginia Wesleyan at 7 pm.
