Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Emory & Henry

EMORY, VA – Chase Branscomb's jumper with 58 seconds to play lifted Emory & Henry to a 65-63 win over Hampden-Sydney Basketball on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Hampden-Sydney 63, Emory & Henry 65
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney 14-9, 6-8 ODAC; Emory & Henry 13-10, 7-7 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • H-SC trailed 13-11 at 13:06, but the Wasps jumped out to a nine-point lead, 24-15, with 8:46 remaining in the first half and pushed the advantage to double digits, 33-23, at 4:39
  • The Tigers got themselves back in the game nine of the last 10 points of the first half to go into halftime down just 34-32
  • The Tigers extended their run to 20-3 early in the second half to go out in front 43-36 five minutes into the second half
  • The Wasps woke up from there. Down 51-45 at 10:53, E&H went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:50 to surge ahead 56-51 at 7:03
  • With E&H leading 63-57 with 4:57 left in the game, the Tigers scored six straight to tie the contest with 1:51 remaining
  • H-SC held the Wasps to just two points the rest of the way, but the next three Tiger possessions all ended in turnovers

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Guilherme Guimaraes (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil/Miller School) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds
  • Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Christian) tied the school record for career assists with 410 and contributed 14 points
  • Andrew Evans (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two assists 

FOR THE FOES

  • Clif Conley came off the bench to post 13 points
  • Ryan Gravley and Aaron Ferguson each chipped in 12 points
  • Brandon Self and Branscomb each grabbed nine rebounds

STATS OF THE GAME

  • Hampden-Sydney shot 47% for the game and held Emory & Henry to at 40% performance
  • Both teams struggled beyond the arc with H-SC at 3-16 and E&H at 8-28
  • The Tigers recorded nine more free throw attempts, but they went 12-19 compared to 7-10 for the Wasps
  • H-SC held a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint
