Football Falls at Shenandoah

Kaleb Smith

WINCHESTER, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team took a 59-34 loss at Shenandoah this afternoon in an offensive battle that featured a combined 1,210 yards of total offense, including 935 through the air. The Hornets' offense rolled early, scoring the first 24 points of the game and never looking back. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in ODAC play, while Shenandoah improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Despite the high scores by both teams, after Shenandoah scored a touchdown on its opening drive, it took until the very end of the first quarter to see a chance in the scoreboard as the Hornets hit a 34-yard field goal with 16 seconds to go in the quarter to go up 10-0.

Shenandoah added two touchdowns late in the second quarter, but as the score went to 24-0 in favor of the Hornets with 2:54 to go in the half, the Tigers were able to respond on the ensuring drive, scoring on a Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin County) two-yard run to cap off an eight play, 76-yard drive.

Hampden-Sydney kicked off with just 44 ticks in the half, but it was all Shenandoah needed as they found the end zone with the clock expiring to take a 31-6 halftime lead.

Smith found pay dirt again on the opening drive of the second half to bring the score to 31-13, but Shenandoah fired right back with an 84-yard drive to go up 38-13.

The Hornets scored once more four minutes later before Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale) threw the first of his two touchdown passes of the day – this one a 23 yard strike to Major Morgan (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy).

The teams continued to trade scores into the fourth quarter with Shenandoah scoring on a 25-yard run and the Tigers on a third touchdown carry from Smith.

The Hornets scored their final touchdown with 5:04 to play, but the Tigers were not done, taking their final drive 73 yards in 3:41 and capped it off with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Blake Page (Richmond, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot).

On the day, the Tigers tallied 552 yards of offense with 445 passing and 107 on the ground. Cobb was 34-of-49 for 445 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Dillon Costello (South Riding, VA/Paul VI) had a game-high 148 yards on nine catches. Morgan also had nine catches to go with 116 yards and a score. Smith and Page each had five receptions, combing for 151 yards and a touchdown.

Smith also led the ground game with 87 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 658 yards with 490 passing and 168 rushing. Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC/Middle Creek) led the way with nine tackles, while Hunter Carr (Fishersville, VA/Wilson Memorial) had eight, and Griffin Davis (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello), Riggs Jordan (Spencer, VA/Hargrave), and Chad Vanlandingham (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) each had seven stops. Matt Dooley (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) added two tackles and an interception.

The Tigers will remain on the road and face Bridgewater next Saturday, October 13 at Jopson Field. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM.
