Mike Mey

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Football Tigers are now the only team in the ODAC without a conference loss as Hampden-Sydney took down Emory & Henry 49-27 at Lewis C. Everett Stadium on Homecoming weekend. The Tigers now take sole possession of first place in the conference at 5-1 overall and 3-0 in ODAC play; the Wasps drop to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC.

The Tigers had yet another monster day offensively, racking up 640 yards of offense as senior receiver Holton Walker (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) broke his own school record for yards in a single-game with 275 yards and three touchdowns on ten catches. Senior quarterback Nash Nance (Calhoun, GA/Tennessee) went 25-of-35 for 381 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for another 50 yards on 15 carries.

Senior back Brady Macko (Kill Devil Hills, NC/First Flight) had his biggest game of the season with 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

The game looked like it would be a shootout from the start with each team scoring on its opening the drive – the Tigers with a Mitch Pereira (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) five-yard reception, and the Wasps with a Lucas Kirby ten-yard reception.

After the game was knotted at 7-7, Nance hit Walker on the first play of the ensuing Tiger drive for a 75-yard score to go up 14-7.

After three consecutive touchdowns, the defenses settled in, and no team scored until the second quarter, when the Wasps scored on a Kevin Saxton quarterback keeper. A failed extra point, however, preserved the Tiger lead at 14-13.

Neither team found its groove offensively, until Nance and Walker connected again ten minutes later.

After a Wasps' three-and-out, Macko found pay dirt on a 27-yard run to go up 28-13.

Just three plays later, senior Shreve Rohle (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) picked off Saxton, and brought it back 23 yards for the 35-13 lead before the half.

The Tigers upped their lead in the third, as Nance and Walker hooked up on a 43-yard score for the only touchdown of the third quarter.

Later, seconds into the fourth the Tigers took their biggest lead of the day at 49-13 with Nance hitting Austin Seay (Dillwyn, VA/Buckingham) for a two-yard score.

The Wasps added two touchdowns in the fourth, but Hampden-Sydney used a strong running game and defense down the stretch to take the win.

Along with Walker's record-breaking day, junior Michael Mey (Glen Allen, VA/VMI) had a career day with 112 yards on five catches.

The Wasps generated 462 yards of total offense with 335 coming through the air and 127 on the ground. Rohle led the way with ten tackles, one for loss, and an interception for a touchdown. Sidney Henry (Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) notched nine tackles, and Robert Stack (Charlotte, NC/Merchant Marine) and Nick Martin (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun Valley) each had eight stops. Josh Doggett (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) five tackles and an interception.

Hampden-Sydney returns to the road as the Tigers travel to Winchester to face Shenandoah University next Saturday, October 25. Kick off is set for 1:00 pm.
