HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney College 17th-year head baseball coach Jeff Kinne has announced the program's Team Captains for the upcoming 2020 season. Serving the Tigers in leadership roles will be senior first baseman/outfielder Matt Spagnolo/Glen Allen and junior right-handed pitcher Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House.
"Everyone is excited about Matt and Bradford becoming the leaders of this year's team," said Kinne. "From the beginning of the fall, these two made it clear that they have the ability to be team leaders."
Spagnolo, a team captain last season, as well, started 31 games in 2019, batting .385 (47-122) with two home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 21 runs, 24 RBIs, 11 walks and three stolen bases. He led the Tigers in doubles, was second in hits, slugging percentage (.557) and on-base percentage (.446), tied for fourth in triples, while fifth in at-bats and home runs. Spagnolo was a First Team All-ODAC selection, while also named to the D3baseball.com All-South Region Second Team, and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State First Team. Matt is the son of Michael and Wendy Spagnolo, and is majoring in economics and business.
Webb made 12 mound appearances last season, starting six games, and compiling a 2-5 record with one save and 24 strikeouts (5.40 K/9) over 40.0 innings. Bradford is the son of Mark and Lindsay Webb, and is majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric.
H-SC will open the 2020 campaign with a non-conference home doubleheader against William Peace University on February 15, 2020 at 12 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
