HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield had three hits and two RBIs, while classmate and captain Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen added two hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 8-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball victory past Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield earned the pitching win for the host Tigers (17-15-2, 11-8-1 ODAC) against the visiting Marlins (18-14, 12-8 ODAC), while classmate Chase Mayberry/Appomattox gained a mound save.
H-SC had eight runs on 11 hits … scoring one run in the first inning, six in the third and one run in the seventh. The Tigers led 7-1 after three innings and 7-4 through six toward the final three-run margin and a split of the two regular season games against VWU.
In the first, junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-5), this week's ODAC Baseball Player of the Week, doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Spagnolo (2-4, 2 RBIs).
In the third, the same duo got things started as Counts singled to open the at-bat and crossed the plate when Spagnolo followed with a run-scoring double. With one out, sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-3, RBI) doubled to plate Spagnolo. The Tigers loaded the bases before Triesler (1-2, RBI) contributed a sacrifice fly RBI to score Clawson. Bartlett (3-4, 2 RBIs) followed with an RBI single to score senior Blake Hartman/Chester (1-4), who had been hit by a pitch, and Counts reached base for the second time during the at-bat, courtesy of a throwing error, allowing Bartlett to cross the plate.
In the seventh, Bartlett added another run-scoring single to score Hartman, who had singled, as well.
Triesler (1-1) started and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings for his first win this season, scattering six hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and one walk. Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. pitched 1.2 innings, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Bradford Webb/Charlotte Court House retired the only batter he faced on a ground ball out to end the eighth inning. Mayberry (1) gained his first career save with a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
H-SC will complete the regular season with a home doubleheader against ODAC member Ferrum College on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark.
