HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield had a double and two RBIs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 27-3 non-conference baseball decision to nationally-ranked No. 2 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.  Freshman Kieran Conway/Chesapeake took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (13-13-2) against the visiting Captains (24-3).

H-SC had three runs on 10 hits … scoring the three runs in the seventh inning after falling behind 25-0 through four innings, and 26-0 in the top half of the seventh.  CNU added a run in the eighth for the final margin, and avenged a 9-5 loss to the Tigers back on March 7 in Newport News, one of just three setbacks for them this season.

In the seventh, sophomore Mack Reese/LaGrange, Ga. (1-3) singled to lead-off, followed by a walk to freshman Mark Evans/Yorktown (2-3), before Grohowski (1-3, 2 RBIs) slammed a two-run double to left center field.  Grohowski crossed the plate via a one-out, RBI double to left field by junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. (1-2, RBI).

Freshman Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (2-4) also contributed two hits for the Tigers, while senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-2) added a double, as well.

Conway (0-3) started and pitched the first inning, allowing six hits and seven runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk.  Junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach was the most effective of the eight pitchers used on the staff day, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of middle relief, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.  Sophomore Matt Muehleck/Martinsville pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at ODAC member Bridgewater College on Saturday, April 13, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Bridgewater.
