Tigers Fall 6-5 to CNU

Trey Celata

MYRTLE BEACH, SC-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell 6-5 to Christopher Newport in the first game of their stay in Myrtle Beach. The Captains took an early lead, but the Tigers scored late, coming within one but saw their comeback fall just short. The Tigers now drop to 5-3 on the young season while Christopher Newport improves to 11-4 overall.

The Captains used one run in the bottom of the first and two in the second to take an early 3-0, but Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) helped get the Tigers on the board in the top of the third, batting in Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) on a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) then scored on a Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) RBI-single to bring the Tigers within one.

Christopher Newport pushed the lead back out with a run in the bottom half of the inning, and again when they drove in a run in the fourth.

The Tigers battled back in the fifth, making it a 5-3 game when Bartlett scored on a wild pitch.

A homerun from Christopher Newport's Jordan Mason in the sixth put the Captains up three.

Bartlett scored his second run of the day along with Smith on a two-RBI double from Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) in the seventh, but that would be as close as the Tigers would come.

On the mound, freshman Harrison Moncure (Glen Allen, VA/Mills Godwin) was the pitcher of decision, allowing five runs – four earned – on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) and Triesler combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings, and Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings.

Offensively the Tigers collected eight hits with Kasiski having a team-high two knocks.

The Tigers will return to action Thursday, March 8 as they play Catholic at the Myrtle Beach Ripken Complex. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
