LYNCHBURG, VA-The fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney baseball team took a 7-2 loss to the second-seeded Generals of Washington & Lee in the second game of the 2017 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The Tigers, who now stand at 21-18 on the season, will face sixth-seeded Roanoke at 11:00 AM at Lynchburg City Stadium on Saturday, May 6.
The Generals got off to the early offensive start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the third to go up 5-0.
Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) rebounded with a strong four innings, keeping Washington & Lee off the board, while the Tigers were able to add one more run in the top of the eighth. Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) reached on a stand up triple, and then Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS) drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
The comeback was halted short, however, as the Generals tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Tom Conklin then finished the job in the ninth, retiring the order to get the complete game victory. Conklin allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Perkins was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing five runs on seven hits and seven walks with eight strikeouts. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits in two innings.
Offensively, the Tigers had seven hits to Washington & Lee's nine. Daugherty led the way with a 2-for-4 performance.
The Tigers will continue its tournament action tomorrow, May 6, as the Tigers face Roanoke at 11:00 AM in the first elimination game of the tournament.
