HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Tiger baseball team fell for the first time this season, dropping a 12-4 decision to Moravian in the second day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 5-1; Moravian improves to 1-1.
Hampden-Sydney was able to string together 11 hits but left nine runners on base throughout the game.
Moravian then took a lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs, including two off of a Joey Maker homerun.
The Greyhounds went deep again in the fifth, extending their lead to 6-1.
Hampden-Sydney responded with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame with Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) batting in Shane Arceo (Newport News, VA/Denbigh) and Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) on a double.
The two teams matched each other again in the seventh with Evan Kulig scoring for the Greyhounds and Gothe scoring for the Tigers.
Before it was over, Moravian was able to add four more in the top of the ninth on four hits.
On the day, Moravian had 18 hits to the Tigers' 11. Wiles, Gothe, Counts, and Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) all had two hits.
On the mound, Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) was the pitcher of decision, allowing seven runs on ten hits with three strikeouts in six innings. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) allowed one run in two innings, and Cameron Meyers (Benson, NC/West Johnston) and Reed Cooper (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) combined to pitch the ninth.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action tomorrow in the final game of the Wilcox Tournament. The Tigers will host Stevenson at 3:00 PM.
