Kinne Earns Most Wins in School History as Tigers Outlast Frostburg State

Coach Kinne

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Head coach Jeff Kinne became the Tigers' all-time winningest coach with 226 victories as the Tigers outlasted Frostburg State 14-13 in a back-and-forth battle. With the win, the Tigers improve to 16-5 on the season; the Bobcats fall to 10-3.

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) led off with a double and was quickly batted in with a Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) RBI-single. Lewis later scored on a Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) RBI to put the team up 2-0.

Dylan Shupe responded and cut the Tiger lead in half in the top of the second with a leadoff homerun.

The Tigers fired right back, however, and with the bases loaded and two outs, Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) hit a base-clearing double to up the Tigers' lead to 5-1.

A Hampden-Sydney error in the fourth helped lead to three Frostburg State runs and bring the Bobcats within one at 5-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Gray led off with a double, and Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) followed that up with a walk; the two then both scored as Carneal reached on an error.

The Bobcats used a two-out rally in the sixth to score six runs, including two on a Zach Weiss triple, to take a 10-7 lead.

The Bobcats' lead was short lived though, as the Tigers reeled off three hits and two doubles to start the inning and tie the game at 10-10. John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) batted in Gray as the go-ahead run. Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) added an insurance run with a double that drove in Chamberlin, putting the Tigers up 12-10. Before the inning ended, Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) helped tack on one more with an RBI-double that drove in Tucker.

Each team scored one more run before the ninth to give the Tigers a 14-13 lead heading into the final frame.

The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the ninth, but Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) picked up the save while preserving the 14-13 win.

Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) picked up the victory after pitching a third of an inning of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Teddy West (Lanexa, VA/Warhill) went the first 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs – six earned – on nine hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

At the plate, the Tigers recorded 12 hits to Frostburg State's 17. Wiles, Lewis, Gray, and Rogers all had two hits, while Gray batted in a team-high four runs to go with two of his own. Wiles and Lewis both scored three runs.

The Tigers return to action this Saturday as they travel to face Eastern Mennonite in a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
