Billy Nixon

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers extended their win streak to nine while improving to 11-2 after sweeping Southern Virginia by scores of 6-0 and 12-4. The Tigers dominated on the mound in game one and at the plate in game two. With the losses, Southern Virginia drops to 1-7 on the season.

Junior Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) made it easy on the offense in the first game, pitching six shutout innings while allowing just one hit. Freshman Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy) then closed the game out in the seventh, retiring all three batters he faced.

Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. After Chamberlin drew a walk, Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) drove him in with a one-out RBI-single.

The Tiger bats came alive in the third, with the first five batters reaching base on four singles and a walk. During that stretch, John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) each batted in two runs to put the Tigers up 5-0.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the fifth with Lloyd crossing the plate on a two out error.

For the game, Hampden-Sydney tallied nine hits, including a 2-for-4 day from Lloyd. Lloyd also scored two runs and batted in two more.

Southern Virginia's Colin Bigelow took the loss after allowing six runs – five earned – on seven hits in five innings work.

The Tigers again took the early lead in the second game, this time with Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) leading off the bottom of the first with a double off the wall and later being batted in by Chamberlin. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) pushed two runs across the plate being walked and hit by a pitch, respectively, while upping the score to 3-0.

Tucker drove in another run in the third, using a one-out single to score Lewis from second and put the Tigers up 4-0. Hampden-Sydney added two more runs before the inning was over as Wiles batted in Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) with a double, and Hamlett batted in Wiles with a single.

In the fourth, Chamberlin and Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) were both walked to start the inning, and Lewis quickly batted them in with a double, putting the Tigers up 8-0. Lung then nearly hit one out, but the double was good enough to score Lewis from second. Lung was then batted around by a Wiles double.

Southern Virginia was able to score in the fifth as Hunter Allen crossed the plate on a Jordan Keefer RBI-single.

Freshman Jeff Decker (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) expanded on the Tigers' lead in the fifth, smashing a homerun to left in his first collegiate at bat.

In the sixth, four walks and a hit batter allowed Zach McNally and Keenan Johnson to cross the plate for the Knights. The Tigers were able to record the second out of the inning, but the sacrifice fly from Mitch Mantle scored Hunter Allen, pulling the Knights within seven at 11-4.

Freshman A.J. Willy (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) used his plate debut to drive in a run with an RBI-double in the sixth.

In the game, the Tigers tallied 14 hits, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Wiles. The junior also had three doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Hamlett and Lewis both went 2-for-2 while Lewis recorded two doubles, three RBI, and two runs.

Lewis also got the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.

Gage Bigelow takes the loss for Southern Virginia, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out one.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Wednesday, March 5, as the Tigers travel to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm.
