NEWPORT NEWS, VA-The Hampden-Sydney wrestlers had a strong outing on January 22 in the Builder's Invitational Tournament, hosted by the Newport News Apprentice School. The Tigers finished fourth overall, missing third place by just half a point.
Freshman Caleb Corbett (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) was most impressive, going 3-0 at the 149-pound weight class, using wins over Liberty, Newport News Apprentice, and Ferrum to win the division.
Freshman Brian Swenson (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) claimed a victory at the 133-pound weight class, placing fifth. Freshman Conner Cronk (St. Augustine, FL/Bolles) and junior Will Griffin (Little Rock, AR/Episcopal Collegiate) also won a match – at the 157-pound and 165-pound weight classes – to finish fifth, respectively.
Junior Jordan Beck (Rome, GA/Darlington), at the 184-pound weight class, fell to East Carolina in his opening match but rebounded with wins against Bridgewater and James Madison. He then fell to Liberty, finishing fourth in the division.
At the 157-pound weight class, freshman David Sniffen (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) placed third, with wins over Penn State, Newport News Apprentice, and Liberty.
Jared Engh (Remington, VA/Woodberry) advanced to the finals of the 165-pound weight class, pinning Ferrum and Newport News Apprentice.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, January 28 as the Tigers face Johns Hopkins and Washington & Lee at McDaniel.
