Tennis Takes 6-3 Win Over Guilford

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Tennis swept all three doubles matches on their way to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Guilford College Quakers on Friday afternoon.

Zach King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) and Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) earned a 9-8 (10-6) marathon win at #1 doubles. David Dodson (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Lawrence Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) teamed to win 8-6 at the #2 flight. Aleksandar Turkovic (Belgrade, Serbia / Miller School) and Tanner Fox (Lexington, VA / Parry McCluer) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at the #3 spot.

Dodson needed three sets to take #2 singles. He dropped the first set 4-6, but rebounded to win the next two 6-0, 6-3. Houston Wilson (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Collegiate) defeated Blake Brown 6-3, 6-2 at the #6 flight. Lawrence Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) also needed three sets to win. He won the first 7-6 (7-2) but lost the second 5-7. With Bowers leading 4-1 in a 10-point tiebreaker, John Brvenik was forced to retire due to injury.

Turner Votipka took a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles while Trevor Cox won at #3 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Mark Cheong got the Quakers third win 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at the #4 flight.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Shenandoah University tomorrow for a 2 pm contest.
