HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team defeated the visiting Maroons of Virginia Wesleyan College 8-1 in the Tigers home opener.
The Tigers took all three doubles matches. Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA / Prince George) took the #1 match 8-3 over Brian Luke and Ryan Sadinski. Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zack King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) teamed at the #3 flight to earn an 8-5 victory against Jamie Griffin and Donnie Greathouse. Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) completed the doubles sweep, taking an 8-6 win against Steven Bond and Griffin Graves.
Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) got singles play off to a strong start, earning the Tigers fourth individual win with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory over Greathouse at the fifth flight. King secured the win for the Tigers as he defeated Bond 6-4, 6-0 at the #2 seed. Calhoun earned a hard fought win at #1 singles, taking down Luke 6-3, 6-5. Sammler needed three sets to notch a win at #3. He took the first set 6-3 against Griffin, but Griffin boucned back in the second set to win 4-6. Sammler then took the tiebreaker set 10-4. Polan wrapped up the eight match win of the day by defeating Graves 6-3, 6-2 at #6 singles.
Sadinski earned the lone Marlin point as he defeated Davis 6-2, 6-0 at the #4 flight.
The Tigers return to the court tomorrow at home against Methodist University at 3:30 pm
