Rich Pugh and Shad Harrell Named 2011 Tennis Captains
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - With the spring sports getting under way, tennis Head Coach Murrie Bates has announced that senior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin)are the 2011 captains.
Pugh was the ODAC Champion in #2 singles a season ago, defeating Washington & Lee's Mac Davis in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Pugh will take over at #1 singles with the graduation of Will Moss '10, who was a four-time ODAC Player of the Year. He went 10-1 overall in singles competition and teamed with Will Moss to go 11-4 at #1 doubles. Pugh was also the ODAC Rookie of the Year in 2008.
Harrell split time between the #2 and #3 singles in 2010, owning a 4-0 record at #2 and 6-6 at #3 to finish 10-6 overall. In doubles competition, he went 13-4 while teaming with former high school teammate Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin).
"Rich and Shad are both very experienced and successful players," Murrie Bates said. "They will provide a great deal of leadership and motivation to a very talented team. The entire team is ready to work hard for another successful season!"
With four of the top six players on the team being seniors, the Tigers wealth of experience and veteran leadership will help carry the Tigers a long way and position themselves to win another ODAC Championship.
