Washington & Lee Tennis Upends Tigers 7-2
LEXINGTON, VA - In a clash of the two top teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), preseason favorite Washington & Lee University upended preseason runner-up Hampden-Sydney 7-2 in a hard fought, competitive match.
Mac Davis and Will Hall defeated the #1 tandem of Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) 8-5 as the Generals held strong on serves and returns. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) returned the favor and won at #2 doubles, defeating Jeremy Becht and Jonathan Gaffney 8-5. Harrell and Calhoun played an all-around solid game and excelled in serves, returns, and volleys. Hayden White and Brian Roberts took down Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) and Zach Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) 8-3 at #3 doubles.
In a match that pitted the likely two top players in the conference, Pugh came away victorious in straights sets - 6-3, 6-3 - against Hayden White. Pugh continually adjusted his game to take advantage of opportunities, and his trademark powerful serve along with consistent returns proved to be too much for White to handle.
The Generals would win out in 2-6 singles. Calhoun took Hall to three sets at #3. Calhoun lost 6-3 in the first set but flipped the tables in the second set, winning 6-3. However, he lost the third set in a close 6-4 decision, a set which saw just one service break. Covington lost a tightly contested, hard-hitting match at #4 singles. He lost 6-2 in the first set, but pushed Michael Freeman to the limit in a 7-5 second set loss. Harrell fell 6-2, 6-3 at #2 after getting off to a slow start, Pack went down 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth spot, and Sammler succumbed 6-1, 6-0 at #6. Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) squared off in an exhibition match against Brian Roberts, and Roberts came out on top 6-4, 6-2.
Hampden-Sydney looks to rebound as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday for a 3:30 pm ODAC tilt.
