MOSS WINS 4TH STRAIGHT POY

SALEM, VA (April 30, 2010)– The Hampden-Sydney tennis team, after one of the best seasons in program history in which they went 15-4 and won the ODAC regular season title, have been rewarded for their stellar play with the announcement of the All-ODAC teams. Leading the way for the Tigers was senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg), who became just the second student-athlete in the history of the ODAC in any sport to be named league player of the year four times. Moss was also named the ODAC scholar-athlete of the year for the second consecutive season. Additionally, head coach Murrie Bates was named coach of the year for the second time. The Tigers' top 6 players were all named All-ODAC, including all three doubles teams.

Currently ranked #11 in the ITA Atlantic South Region rankings, Moss went 9-4 at #1 singles this season, including a perfect 7-0 in ODAC play. In doubles action, Moss teamed up with junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) to go 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the ODAC, and the pair is currently ranked #10 in the Atlantic South Region. In his unprecedented career, Moss went 45-9 overall in singles, including an astounding 31-1 in ODAC competition, and this season he led the Tigers into the ITA national rankings for the first time since the 1980s. He was also named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the year for the second straight season, which marked the third straight winner of the award from Hampden-Sydney. A history major with a minor in military leadership and national security studies, he boasts a 3.657 gpa, was the chairman of the Hampden-Sydney honor court, a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and a Hampden-Sydney senior campaign captain. He also boasts membership in Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership honor society), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Phi Sigma Iota (foreign language), and Phi Beta Kappa.

The man behind the recent success of Tiger Tennis, head coach Murrie Bates, earned his second ODAC Coach of the Year award following his 2008 win. Those two decorations are sandwiched around his 2009 VaSID Coach of the Year honor. Since his arrival at Hampden-Sydney in 2006, the Tigers are 53-19 overall, including a 30-6 mark in ODAC play.

In addition to those three awards, the rest of the 2010 Tiger Tennis team was just as impressive, with every player landing on the All-ODAC team. Pugh went 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC to earn first team honors at the no. 2 position, and also paired with Moss in no. 1 doubles to also make the first team. At the no. 3 singles position, junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) earned first team honors after a 10-6 campaign, including a 7-1 ODAC mark. He paired with sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) at no. 2 doubles to earn second team honors. Calhoun also earned second team honors at the no. 4 singles position after going 12-3 overall, including a perfect 7-0 ODAC mark.

At the no. 5 singles spot, junior Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) was named to the first team after going 9-5 overall and 6-1 in ODAC play. He paired up with junior Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) at the no. 3 doubles position to win second team honors. Pack was also named to the second team at the no. 6 singles position after a 7-7 campaign that included a 5-2 ODAC mark.
