HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 17, 2009)– The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team responded well to a tough loss to Christopher Newport a week ago by gaining a good 9-0 win over USA South foe Ferrum College. The Tigers were led in singles play by Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) who defeated John Hartin in the no. 1 spot. Pugh had a convincing win at 6-2, 6-0.

Pugh also teamed up with William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) in the no. 1 doubles spot to defeat Hartin and Matt Mellone 8-1.

Hampden-Sydney was also able to show its great depth as Matt McFarland (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage)and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George) teamed up for the first time and produced an 8-1 victory.

Phillip Parrish (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) also delivered a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win in his first match of the spring.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 18 as the Tigers host Lynchburg College at 3:30 pm.
