Swimming Crushes Greensboro 105-64 for First Win in Program History
GREENSBORO, NC - The Hampden-Sydney swimming team made history on Friday night as they crushed the Pride of Greensboro College in Greensboro 105-64 to earn the program's first ever win in only its second dual meet.
The 200 yard medley relay team edged out the Pride by 2.5 seconds as Ke Shang (Beijing, China / Beijing No. 35), Sam Smith (Kitty Hawk, NC / First Flight), William Graf (Wayne, PA / Conestoga), and Josh Hamilton (Herndon, VA / Herndon) combined for the winning effort in a time of 1:54.44. Smith and Graf took first and second in the 200 yard freestyle. Smith won the event with a 2:12.39 while Graf was runner up in 2:14.28.
Hamilton and Lee Ayscue (Lynchburg, VA / Virginia Episcopal) took the top two spots in the 50 yard freestyle with each swimmer finishing with a respective time of 24.24 and 25.38. John Bishop (Guntersville, AL / Randolph School) took runner up in the 200 yard IM as he reached the finishing mark in 2:35.35. Graf also finished second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.27.
Hamilton, Ayscue, and Alex Boal (Tucker, GA / Chamblee) finished 1-2-3 in the 100 yard freestyle with respective times of 53:81, 57:59, and 1:09.35. Shang and Nik Kasper (Dayton, OH / Culver Academies) took the top two places in the 100 yard backstroke as they posted times of 1:07.79 and 1:21.74. The Tigers also went 1-2 in the 500 yard freestyle as Paul Salmon (Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton) took first in 6:00.18 and Kasper completed the race in 6:35.69.
The Tigers closed out the meet by winning the 200 yard freestyle relay, winning the event 1:44.22 to 1:55.58 with Bishop, Smith, Ayscue, and Salmon earning the win.
