Tigers Drop 3-2 Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Randolph-Macon

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Tigers soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime heart breaker to archrival Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.

Randolph-Macon's David Sullivan scored an unassisted tally in the 13th minute to put the visitors up 1-0. Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA/York) responded seven minutes later with a well placed direct kick into the left post from a few yards outside the top right of the box to make it a 1-1 game. The score would hold for the remainder of the first-half.

Hampden-Sydney took a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute when Bryan Hughes (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) beat his defender on the end line and sent in a service to Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) who converted on a low lying strike to the right of the goal. R-MC evened the match at 2-2 in the 83rd minute when Tommy Fisher finished off a Evan Verbeek pass to force overtime.

The Tigers looked like they had scored the game winner just seconds before the end of the first overtime as Curran Blackwell's (Wilson, NC/Greenfield) shot looked like it went all the way across the goal line, but the referee did not count it and Matty Rocawich dived to stop the goal. James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) recovered the rebound right in front of the net but a R-MC defender was in front of him to block the shot to force double overtime.

In the 104th minute, Hampden-Sydney was whistled for a foul no more than a few yards outside of the top right of the box to give the Yellow Jackets a direct kick. Ethan Cornelio capitalized on the excellent spot and shot towards the left post for the game-winning goal.

Hampden-Sydney closes out the regular season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. contest against Roanoke College. After the game, the seven Tiger seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the soccer program over their four-year careers.
