Hampden-Sydney Soccer Takes Down Washington & Lee 1-0 in Overtime
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Tigers soccer team took down Washington & Lee University 1-0 in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from Miller Field.
Hampden-Sydney was outshot 18-9, but very few of the Generals' 18 shots threatened to score as the majority were off the goal or were shot directly at John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park), who tied his career high with nine saves on the day.
W&L opened up the game strong and had two consecutive shots that would have won them the game. The first occurred at 6:28 into the game when Alex Zelinksi fired a rocket that hit the far post. Just 16 seconds later, Jamie Paldino sent in a header shot, but a beautiful leaping save by Plyler turned back the shot. From then, W&L often settled for shots from outside the box as they never were able to get many more chances from inside the box.
The Hampden-Sydney offense was creating good scoring opportunities but could not connect on some passes in the box to capitalize. However, that ended in overtime. In the 93rd minute, Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) received a pass in the box and looked like he was going to shoot but passed it to right by far right post where Chris Whiteside (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) received the ball. Whiteside was able to get just enough on the ball to tap it to send it trickling in as he was falling into the goal with it. The ball barely reached pass W&L goalkeeper William Dorrance as the team rushed the field in celebration.
Bryan Hughes (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) led the team with three shots, two on goal while Jamie Paldino and James Pymm led the Generals with four and three shots respectively. H-SC held a 9-2 advantage in saves, but Washington & Lee had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Hampden-Sydney travels to Greensboro, NC, for a second time this season as they play ODAC opponent Guilford College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
