H-SC Soccer Picked to Win the ODAC

FOREST, VA - In a tight vote indicating the parity in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer ranks, the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers received four first-place votes and 110 total points to edge out a strong field for first place in the ODAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, as voted on by league coaches.

Lynchburg, the 2009 ODAC Champion, came in second with four first place votes and 106 points, Roanoke received two first-place tallies and 103 points, and Virginia Wesleyan, picked fourth (one first place), trailed H-SC by just 11 points, coming in at 99 points.

The Tigers return a strong contingent of players, headlined by sensational forward Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run). Wharton finished tied for second in the ODAC in both goals (14) and points (31).  Joining Wharton on the offense is 2009 ODAC Rookie of the Year, Nick DeProspero (Midlothian, VA/Cosby). A second team All-ODAC athlete in 2009, DeProspero dazzled in his rookie campaign as he roared onto the scene to place second in the ODAC in assists with 10 and chipped in five goals for 20 points. Also contributing to the Tigers' attack is forward Bryan Hughes (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) (five goals, two assists) and midfield captainMatt Hampton (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) (1g, 6a). The defense is led by a pair of senior captains in defenderSam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) and goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) (0.61 GAA, 69 saves).  Plyler was a second team All-ODAC player last season after helping his team to a league-best 12 goals allowed.
