(September 15, 2008)OWINGS MILLS, MD – Freshman Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) had another monster game as he scored two of the Tigers' three goals in their 3-1 victory over Stevenson University. Wharton led off with the first goal of the game in the 29th minute of play. The play started as junior forward Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) chipped the ball cross-field to an open Wharton, who beautifully lofted it over 6-0 keeper Adam Wiatrowski.
Stevenson tried to create chances but struggled to get shots off as Hampden-Sydney's defense held strong and quickly took any ball near their goal. Stevenson would find the net, however, in the 38th minute of play. The ball was shot in the air, and sophomore keeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) made the save punching the ball up, but unfortunately for the Tigers, Jake Stocksdale was right there to head in the rebound.
Coming into the second half tied, both teams showed how badly they wanted to win this physical battle. Hampden-Sydney came out firing. The Tigers had many great looks out of their 11 second half shots including a shot from Robertson who eluded four defenders before meeting Wiatrowksi who came up with a great save. Senior midfielder Michael Krewinghaus (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) would also join the firing squad that made Wiatrowski work, as he missed just high on a free kick from right outside of the box.
The Tigers were not the only ones putting up quality shots though. Stevenson's Tyler King found himself in a breakaway situation in the 70th minute - with the game still tied 1-1. Plyler came out to challenge King, and as King fired his shot Plyler made a remarkable diving save to keep the Mustangs from gaining the lead.
With the momentum from Plyler's huge save, the Tigers would capitalize on the offensive end. Robertson - who was tough to stay in front of as he reeled off five shots - caught the ball on a fast break, and ripped a shot on goal. It missed just right and bounced off the cross bar. Fortunately for the Tigers, junior JoJo Howard (Lanexa, VA/New Kent) was in the right spot to hit the game winning shot in the 79th minute.
Hampden-Sydney would not stop there as they made sure to score an insurance goal with under a minute to play. Senior Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) had a perfect cross field pass that hit Wharton right in front of the goal as he headed it in for his second goal of the day.
The Tigers were also highlighted by their phenomenal defensive play from the back line of Brett Chonko (Farmville, VA/Prince Edward), Christopher Tait (Nokesville, VA/Brentsville), Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine), and Matt Swaney (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls).
Hampden-Sydney will continue their three game road stretch as they get set to take on the Wasps of Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA on Saturday the 20th at 1 pm.
