SOCCER TIGERS FALL SHORT AT EMU, 1-0
HARRISONBURG, VA (October 28, 2003)—Hampden-Sydney College's soccer team was defeated by Eastern Mennonite University, 1-0, Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. With the loss, the Tigers (7-9-1/2-7 ODAC) fall just short of earning a bid to the ODAC Tournament, while the Royals (8-3-5/5-2-2 ODAC) will be the league's fourth seed.
Eastern Mennonite's Clayton Suydam scored the game's only goal off an assist from Eric Blosser in the 20th minute. Hampden-Sydney battled back, banging three shots off the cross bar, but the Tigers were unable to convert.
Overall, H-SC out-shot EMU, 24-20, while the Royals had eight corner kicks, compared to four for the Tigers.
The game wraps up a trying season for the Tiger soccer team, which battled through an injury-riddle season in which at least eight different players missed games due to injuries and illness, including 2002 All-American Chad Quenneville and University of Richmond-transfer Grant Dickens. Despite the tribulations, no fewer than ten freshmen played in more than 11 contests on the year, gaining valuable experience for future seasons.
