HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. scored three goals, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 17-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse decision to nationally-ranked No. 16 Washington and Lee University on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. added one goal and two assists for the host Tigers (6-3, 1-1), who trailed 6-1 at halftime. A.J. Witherell scored four goals with two assists for the nationally-ranked and visiting Generals (6-4, 3-0) in the conference contest.
H-SC fell behind 3-1 after one quarter as freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g) scored unassisted at 3:01. The Tigers did not score a goal in the second quarter as W&L added three more goals to lead 6-1 at the intermission.
The Generals outscored the hosts 7-0 in the third quarter to take a 13-1 advantage through three quarters. H-SC battled back in the fourth quarter and took a 5-4 advantage in scoring to provide for the final margin. Duffy (3g) scored the first three goals of the period at 14:32, assisted by Medwar (1g, 2a), at 13:58, assisted by junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. (1g, 1a), and at 12:16, assisted by sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville (1a). Hayden added a goal at 6:09, assisted by Medwar, and Medwar scored the final goal at 4:36, unassisted.
Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the first 56:13, yielding 16 goals while making 16 saves. Sophomore William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the final 3:47, allowing one goal with one save.
Sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. won 14-25 face-offs and collected eight ground balls with one caused turnover.
W&L took a 46-31 advantage in shots, including 34-14 in shots on-goal, with Duffy posting eight shots. The Generals had a 33-27 edge in ground balls.
H-SC will remain at home to welcome ODAC opponent Guilford (N.C.) College on Saturday, March 30, at 4 p.m. at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
