VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Virginia Wesleyan College secured the #2 seed in the ODAC Tournament with a 12-10 win over Hampden-Sydney

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Virginia Wesleyan 12, Hampden-Sydney 10
  • Records: Hampden-Sydney (8-6, 5-3 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan (10-4, 7-1 ODAC)
  • Location: Virginia Beach, VA – Foster Field

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Virginia Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the game and would lead by at least two until midway through the fourth quarter
  • With the Tigers trailing 11-8 with 10 minutes left in the final quarter, Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) and Mike Funk (Chantilly, VA / Middleburg) scored back-to-back goals at 9:30 and 7:01 to draw the Tigers within one
  • Over the next four minutes, H-SC committed four turnovers and the last one proved costly as Joe Papetti scored at 2:12 to put the Marlins back up by two.
  • Hampden-Sydney won the ensuing face-off, but turned over the ball shortly thereafter as Virginia Wesleyan was able to ice away the win by using up nearly the entire clock before giving it away with less than 30 seconds remaining

TIGER TOP PERFORMERS

  • Dontae Buck (Baltimore, MD / Baltimore City College) won 20-of-25 face-offs to go with 10 ground balls
  • Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Latin) posted two goals and two assists
  • Mike Funk also contributed four points on two scores and two helpers
  • Fleet Jernigan (Kitty Hawk, NC / First Flight) found the back of the net twice with an assist
  • Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA / Western Albemarle) handed out two assists

FOR THE FOES

  • Josh Currier and Tim Gunn each had three goals and an assist
  • Joe Papetti scored twice
  • Rory Finnegan made 13 saves

STATS OF THE GAME

  • H-SC went 21-for-26 on face-offs, leading to a 45-31 advantage in ground balls
  • Turnovers doomed the Tigers as they committed a season-high 22 while VWC had 15 giveaways
  • Virginia Wesleyan went 2-5 on man-up opportunities while the Tigers did not convert on their one EMO
