No. 14 Hampden-Sydney Golf Finishes Tied For 11th At Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Hampden-Sydney College posted a final round of 301 in men's golf on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 887 (290-296-301) to finish in a tie for 11th place among 30 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia.  Junior Adam Hade/Richmond (69-74-75) and freshman John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (70-71-77) led the Tigers, ranked 14th in the latest Golfstat NCAA Division III Top 25, with their respective scores of 218 at the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes' course, tied for 22nd individually among the 150 golfers.

Hade and Ferguson were followed by sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (74-76-76--226, t-62), junior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (81-78-73--232, t-103) and senior Jamie Agnew/Fairfax (77-75-81--233, t-107).

H-SC tied for eighth in par 5 scoring (4.85) and was ninth in par 4 scoring (4.19).  The Tigers tied for third in eagles (2) and tied for fifth in pars (170).  Smith (pictured, credit Derrick Davis) tied for eighth in pars (38), while Hade (37) and Ferguson (37) each tied for 14th.  Agnew (1) and Ferguson (1) each tied for fourth in eagles.

Nationally-ranked No. 1 Emory (Ga.) (858) won the tournament, followed by No. 2 Huntingdon (Ala.) (861), No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan (864), No. 37 Oglethorpe (Ga.) (866) and No. 7 Methodist (N.C.) (868) among the top five.  The Tigers were just two shots out of 10th (885).  Stephen Shephard of Huntingdon took individual medalist honors at 12-under par 69-69-66--204.

Playing as individuals and earning Top 10 finishes at the Jekyll Island Individual Collegiate at the Jekyll Island GC Oleander course, a par 72, 6,521-yard layout, were freshman Hunter Martin/Gloucester (73-73-73--219, t-4) and sophomore Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. (77-72-76--225, t-6).  Both Martin and Yerramsetti posted their best 54-hole scores this year.  Complete results for this additional event can be found here.

H-SC will play again in the 54-hole Camp Lejeune Invitational on April 5-7 at the Paradise Point Golf Course - Scarlet/Gold Courses in Jacksonville, North Carolina.  The Tigers' B Team will compete at the Marlins Invitational on March 23-24 at the Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
